Strava Nov 2024 API change blocks segment leaderboard and analytics apps for phone-GPS athletes

In November 2024 Strava deprecated the read_all scope used by VeloViewer, Flyby, and segment-leaderboard apps. Athletes who record via Strava iPhone/Android GPS (no Garmin/Wahoo/Polar) lost access entirely because those apps require a device-direct connection Strava no longer permits. The coaching restriction was clarified in Dec 2024 but segment and leaderboard analytics remain blocked. Hundreds of athletes posted on DC Rainmaker (468 comments), Intervals.icu forum (248 replies), and Hacker News (260 engagement) demanding the access be restored. Strava has not responded with a restoration timeline. A standalone segment analytics web app that works with the reduced API scope (or a device upload bridge) has no credible incumbent.

Gap Assessment

Wide OpenNo dedicated solution exists

Strava explicitly changed API policy Nov 2024, deprecated read_all scope. VeloViewer and similar segment/leaderboard apps are broken for Strava-only phone GPS athletes. Intervals.icu works only with Garmin/Wahoo/Polar device-direct. No third-party app has shipped a working segment analytics layer within the new restricted API scope for Strava-only athletes.
